Review: Total disregard for baby's
On boxingday (2010) my wife and I were traveling together with our 10 months old son from Amsterdam (Schiphol) to Belgrade, having a transfer in Vienna. During both flights Austrian airlines did not take into consideration at all that we were traveling with a baby. Where other airlines allow passengers with a baby to board first, during our first flight we had no choice but to enter the plane along with the second group to enter (the groups were sorted based on the row numbers). Because our fellow passengers charged forwards as soon as the sign was given to board the plane, we were amongst the last passengers to enter the plane (it is not possible to move so quickly with a baby). Meanwhile, all baggage compartments were as good as completely full and we were stuck with a considerable amount of hand luggage that we could not stow away (again, when you travel with a baby…). The seat next to ours was occupied, forcing us to cram our entire luggage between our legs, while restraining our baby. All other passengers were seated at that point, so it was quite obvious to the flight personnel what was going on. Where they now had the opportunity to ask the woman seated next to us to move to one of the many empty seats in the second class (including one seat in the row directly behind us) or to offer us seats in the completely empty business class section, we were completely ignored and they commenced positioning the plane for take off and giving the safety instructions. Not surprisingly, despite the exemplary behavior of our little boy, we were quite stressed. In addition, with our luggage crammed between our legs and the resulting difficulties changing the baby and going to the toilet the flight itself was very uncomfortable. The second flight was not much better, but because we were on our guard this time we managed to stow away more of our luggage. Summarizing, I grade Austrian airlines with a low mark, which is based completely on their poor service and total disregard for passengers with a baby. I therefore advise passengers with baby’s not to fly with Austrian airlines.
